My nowhereabouts in peace and books
Published in
About half a year ago, I took advantage of a sale to buy some classical books I’d been long longing for. Amongst others, there were Horace’s Ars Poetica and Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. That may or may not be the reason why most of the Fortune Cookie sections on this blog are filled with Latin.
I mean, it’s literally impossible for me to know. That section is built with quotes chosen randomly. I can guarantee, though, it’s likely you will come across a lot of quotes in Latin, since the text pool the system fetches its quotes from has most of its available inputs come from those two authors.
Anyhow, today I finished the last book from the batch, at last. I first heard about it ten years ago, possibly when I was reading Montaigne, another author whose quotes you may see here. It was the piece by Lucretius. The founder of modern science, materialism, and my favourite philosophical schools.
But this is not a review, let alone a rearview storytelling. I’m just happy to conclude this journey. Oh, and I’ve been writing a lot, again. It’s hard not to practise art, when the weather is as fine as it is this weekend, and the music is right — and Yuji Ohno’s Cosmos is a fitting soundtrack for today’s reading.
After a somewhat long stressful while, life’s begun treating me a little better, too. Thankfully. It’s a scientific miracle how my brain hasn’t liquified into pure cortisol juice yet. Going out, taking the train, and meeting people whose company you enjoy can do wonders for your mental health.
Who could have guessed, huh?
